To achieve success on their journey towards DevOps, most organisations need to change the way the work, often even establish a new culture. This journey comes with some of the biggest challenges since the advent of agile software engineering practices. This cultural shift concerns all of IT, not just software engineering. Many IT roles experience a shift in the way they work.
Tech is easy - humans are hard
But the potential of DevOps is so promising that organisations need to act quickly and make sure they realize the associated benefits. The improved collaboration between business, development and operations results in innovative, flexible solutions with good quality, which can be released to the customer more often.
The business value of software cannot be realized before it is released to the customer. Today, that path is often (too) long and difficult. Long cycles for development, testing and integration prolong the time-to-market and the quality suffers under too many manual steps. Automation of system provisioning, testing, configuration and operations is one of the key factors towards a successful implementation of DevOps. This starts with the automation of simple repetitive tasks and can go as far as fully automating deployment and operations of large environments.
With DevOps, the boundaries between Development and Operations disappear. The goal is to achieve seamless, continuous collaboration, ideally by working together as one team. Tooling, infrastructure and processes are shared, and defined and developed together.
Introducing DevOps does not only concern the way of working of IT departments - a wholistic approach towards changing your organisation is asked for. Seamless collaboration between Dev and Ops is an important aspect - but not the only one.
